Greed: A Spiritual Disease
Within you there exists certain social roles. Three of these help you to meet needs and can give you a sense of comfort. Expressing these in more therapeutic terms these helping roles are like an internal hypnotist, an internal counselor, and an internal comforter. Respectively, I call these the Artist, the Director, and the Caretaker.
The Artist uses creative suggestion to stimulate play and trust, the Director uses objective guidance to help with mindfulness and hope, the Caretaker uses empathy to help with a sense of helpful strength and love.
All these role perspectives communicate with the feeling soul or Kid within us, and its organizational counter part in society called “trade”. Using our imaginations we can communicate such comfort within our minds, and use our imagination to see and care for the Kid in others.
Within Society this communication can be seen in the communications of the Media, the Government, and Extended Family Organization, with our core more intensely felt organization of trade. Healthy societies nourish trade but do not let it control the society it is a fire of desire which needs to be contained, educated and strongly influenced by the Media which is the Artist role in society, the Government which the Director role in society, and the Media which is the Artist role in society.
Within the New Testament mythology we find the poetic statement that runs as follows: “But now abide faith (trust), hope and love, these three, and the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13
Love is where the deep healing begins to take place that liberates you or your society from damaged faith and hope, it elevates the ability to trust and to see a way forward in life. Yet these three must work together and all three helping roles help to open up the wounds of damaged faith in love (pained need), and resolve them into what they truly are in the present (the time after the events that caused this damage). What they are in the present are losses that then need to be grieved.
Bondage to damaged faith causes us to seek symbols of the needs we had that met helplessness in the form of direct harm or deprivation. These symbols of need are broader or more generalized than the original need and they set up a struggle for symbolic fulfillment or symbolic love that is a greed, a thirst that can never be filled.
The “love of money” or “gain” is a form of need. Our current profit driven societies are warped from what is human and natural, there can never be enough profit, and profit is built eventually on the suffering of many who are the “have nots”, putting more and more people into debt to the “profit system” while enriching the upper few (now sometimes called the “one percent”).
This “spiritual disease of greed” formed by damaged faith encapsulated in elements which can be called pained need (need encased in helplessness) is destroying our world, and only enlightened progressive therapies and politics can end this destruction.
Corporate capitalism is the obvious evolute of this social and individual “spiritual” disease process. Communicating better with real comfort to the core feeling self or Kid within us, or the core trade elements in society, is the only cure. (Real and lasting cure for this greed disease demands that the healing be both social and individual.)
There is much more to this, but I will end my explanation of this at this elementary stage.
Let us end this discussion of the greed disease with another statement in the New Testament: “The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.” 1 Timothy 6:10
This has not been an attempt to say that the New Testament should as a whole be guide for you life, but it does contain some abiding wisdom.
